Is Google+ Better Than Facebook?

The truth is, I’m not that much into social media, so you can take much of what I have to say on the subject with a grain of salt. I have a Twitter account, but rarely Tweet. I have a Facebook account, but only log on about once a month. I think I even have a MySpace page though, again, I rarely log on and even then it’s just to listen to music.

Now, a while back I may or may not have mentioned that I acquired a Google+ account during the early invite-only period.  And I’ll have to admit, even though most of my friends are still using Facebook, I like Google+ better.  There are several reasons for this:

1. It integrates nicely with Google’s other services.

2. It has a neater, cleaner interface and doesn’t freeze-up the way Facebook often does and is better organized (no timeline bullshit to clutter up your pages).

3. It’s easier search for things of Plus than on Facebook. For instance, say I was looking for something about the Internet marketing brand, Sterkly. I just type in sterkly Google+ and Sterkly’s Plus page shows up in the top results, whereas, on Facebook, I’d get pages and pages of people named Sterkly.

4. Better user control over privacy.

No, I’m not into social media. It’s not something I couldn’t live with out. But If I did spend every waking moment on a social networking site, it’d probably be Google+.

I,Zombie

You don’t feel like getting out of bed this morning. It takes an extra hour after you open your eyes to talk yourself out of bed. First you have to come to terms with the fact that you are still breathing, that you have not died in the night and gone straight to hell. One you do crawl out from under the covers and splash water on your face. The only thing waiting for you is a lonely breakfast of some “healthy” cereal that taste like cardboard.

Some days  you feel like all the life’s being choked out of you by a rubber necklace.  No love. No money and the wolves are at the door.

Politics are boring. Porn is boring. Food is boring. Exercise is boring.Games are boring. Books are boring. Movies are boring. (and it seems like you’ve seen them all anyway).

Nothing satisfies. Nothing inspires.

So you feel trapped. Because are there is are distractions and none are very distracting. All they do a remind you of how miserable you are. And you are miserable because your goals are unattainable. You tried and tried, but failed every time out of the gate. Now you have quit, dropped out for the first time in your life. At first, it felt like a vacation. At least, that’s what you told yourself at the time. But now, you’ve overstayed your welcome in this nether region where time keeps moving, but you are standing still. Well, not really standing still. The walking dead. That’s what you are. A walking, mumbling, stumbling, lurching zombie stalking the edges of your own life.

Not Everyone Can Win a Pulitzer

I remember back in the day, when I belonged to this writer’s group, their was this woman who truly believed she’d become this big name writer and win all the major literary prizes. She was so convinced of this, that it was the motivating force behind he writing. After several years of failure on her part, she gave up and became a part-time teacher/housewife. Without getting into the question of whether or not she had any talent, I will say that I’ve always believed that writing is a kind of spiritual calling as opposed to a profession. What I mean by that is that, simply put, a calling is something you pursue regardless of fame, fortune or winning trophies and awards. A job is something you do strictly because you are being paid to do it.  Admit it, if you were working a Walmart and the manager suddenly came up to you one day and said, “Kid, we’ve decided that you need to give us three days a week with no pay in order to keep your job,” you wouldn’t show up for work the next day. Well . . . a true writer doesn’t quit writing when he realizes that there are no great rewards in his future. He persists to last breath. That’s a calling.
