RIP, Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is dead.  It’s not that much of a surprise. He was sick for a long time and when he stepped down from Apple a couple of months ago, it was clear his days were numbered.  He gets a lot of credit for saving Apple and changing its fortunes. And there’s no denying that he did do that. You might well say that he is to computers what rustic log furniture is to logs.  I don’t mean that sarcastically (even though I am not, admittedly, an Apple fanboy). He had a knack for repackaging technology already in existence into something consumers want to buy. Apple didn’t invent anything. The didn’t invent portable music players, but they made the ipod a must-have accessory. They didn’t invent the tablet device, but they made it sexy. They didn’t invent cellphones, but they married it to the ipod and expanded they market. Apple is a company built on bullshit, but Steve Jobs was very good at spinning bullshit. Apple will not be the same without him. He wasn’t Jesus Christ, or Gandhi. He didn’t cure cancer (obviously). But he made his mark and he changed the way we view technology. And that’s something to be applauded.
