Don’t Shoot Yourself!

Being as I’m coming to the end of my NanoWriMo journey, I’ve been thinking a lot about novel writing and whether it’s worth it. John Irving has always been a bit of a snob when it comes to American novels and novelists, so you have to take everything he says about it with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, I agree with him in part. I’m not sure it’s necessarily harder for a first novelist to get published than it was forty years ago, but I do think it’s harder to be a truly successful novelist nowadays. Still and all, I’m not planning on shooting myself even though the prospect of trying to sell my book once it’s completed, revised, polished is about as much fun to think about as a depression treatment review probably is to a psychiatric patient.
