Doing What Must Be Done Isn’t Easy
Published August 18th, 2009 | Let me tell you about my ex-brother-in-law: This guy is an alcoholic. Doesn’t exercise. His idea of fitness is to sit around the house in front of the TV, eating junk food and drinking beer. And now that he’s retired from the correctional department, he’s got even more time to do this. He looks awful. His skin slightly jaundiced and a bloated stomach (a sure sign of liver and/or pancreatic disease). In lieu of exercise and changes in his diet or drinking habits, he pops fat burner pills, thinking that will somehow make everything better. Oh, and did I mention that he smokes two packs a day?
I guess if there is any moral to this anecdote, it’s that we often do things that are bad for us, even when we know better. For instance, with regard to the usual topic of this blog, in our writing lives, we often acquire bad habits that are hard to break. Even when those bad habits keep us from getting published or stand in the way of moving forward, we will insist on holding onto our habits. It’s a struggle to let go. I know. I hate change. It’s so much easier to remain stuck in place, even when it hurts us in the long-run.
