Something to Think About the Next Time I Have to Call for Tech Support

Some days, I feel like I have a “kick me” sign on my back:

Dear John,

I found your website through Duotrope Digest and enjoyed reading your frank and bold submission guidelines. I do agree- there is room only for one ego and since the website is yours, you are definitely entitled to that space! If your ego can take a small hit, I would like to point out that it is not fitting for the editor of a quality journal to have spelling errors on his website.

“I am losing up restrictions on file attachments….” (loosening would be ideal). Just thought I would point it out.

Regards,

Anupama Shankar

Of course, I’m the type of guy who kicks back:

Dear Anupama Shankar,

What I find interesting is that you’ve got nothing better to do than to email me about a minor typo on my website. And, while I appreciate your concern about my ego and my website, I’m afraid I’m at a loss as to why, after reading my “frank and bold submission guidelines”, you’d think it was a good idea to reproach me in this manner. Are you mentally retarded? Got a hard-on for your ESL handbook? Or are you simply another random jackass who wants to pick a fight? Well, let’s get something clear, shall we?

1. There’s a big fucking difference between an unintentional typo made during a quick update at 2 a.m. and a genuine spelling error made due to ignorance. And, while I’m sure you had a real good time practicing that sarcastic remark in front of a mirror, I find your comment to be witless and uncalled for.

2. That typo was fixed a while ago, you idiot — where have you been?

3. As for what is and is not fitting for an editor of a quality journal — Asshole! As you, yourself, pointed-out, it is my website, so IF I WANT TO MISSPELL EVERY FUCKING WORD ON IT THEN THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I’LL DO. You feel me, slick?
