Do I Need Anti-virus Software?

With all this talk recently, about virus attacks, you may be asking yourself, “ Do I need Antivirus Software?

Well, obviously, if you don’t have an anti-virus program installed on your machine or, if your anti-virus hasn’t been updated in a long time, you’ve got a problem. There’s a new virus (or rather, an old one making a comeback) threatening to attack in the coming days: It’s the Win32/Conficker.A worm and it’s slated to hit sometime on April 1 2009.

The Win32/Conficker.A Win32/Conficker.A is a worm that exploits yet another security vulnerability in Windows in order to spread. It may also download and execute various files. Win32/Conficker.A creates a copy of itself in the %System% directory with a random filename. The worm then injects itself into the “services.exe” process to keep itself resident in your machine’s memory thereby making it very hard to clean out of the system. Once embedded in your system, it can create much mischief including disabling various services, scheduling tasks that allow it to replicate itself, infecting other machines, denying access to your administration area and blocking access to security websites preventing reboot in safe mode.

If you have an anti-virus program already installed, but have not updated it in a while or scanned your computer, do so. But, if you don’t have anti-virus already installed, you might want to consider Cyberdefender as a solution. It offers 5-in-1 protection (anti-virus, anti-spam,anti-spyware, anti-phishing protection and early detection) for less than McAfee or Norton.
