Writing Prompt #6: Farmhouse Massacre

That’s right, it’s time for another writing prompt, time to open up the exterior shutters of your mind and look inside:

Imagine you grew up on a farm.

You grew up on a farm, but moved to the city for college and only return on rare visits with family.  Now, imagine you have returned for one of these visits.  You turn into the long dirt driveway and pull up in front of the house. It’s mid-morning, yet you notice that your Dad, your Uncle and your older brother are not working in the fields as you’d expect.  The tractor is idle and parked at the edge of the field. Skippy, the family dog doesn’t bark.  Odd, you think You enter the house.  “Hey, Ma,” you shout.

No one answers. Funny, the truck is parked outside.  You smell something burning — burnt bread or a pie baking in the oven.  You enter the kitchen and quickly turn-off the oven.  Then you notice it: blood in the two big farmhouse sinks — lots and lots of blood.

Write a story that begins where this prompt leaves off.  How do you react?  Where is everyone? Are they dead? If so, where are the bodies? More importantly, if they are dead, who killed them? Could the killer still be in the house
